Ek Duniya Web Services
OneWorld South Asia has focused on building ICT capacities and toolsets at the grassroots to amplify the concerns of the poor and marginalized. In 2003 it set up the Ek Duniya Web Services (EDWS) initiative, aiming to leverage the use of ICT among communities as a strategic communication tool and strengthen ongoing efforts for sustainable development, poverty reduction and social justice in South Asia.
EDWS helps create and nurture online communities that advocate proactive state and civil society action; transparency in governance; and pro-poor policy discourse.
EDWS uses Ek Duniya, an easily customizable open-source Content Management System (CMS) that effectively overcomes the bandwidth constraints and other technological bottlenecks that typify ICT use in rural South Asia.
Developed by OneWorld South Asia on Plone, this user-friendly software solution has been used by partner organizations, intermediate civil society, community-based organizations and collectives to register quality web presence in local languages. Ek Duniya can be used by organizations with very little technical expertise to host local language content and update their websites for effective e-communication and advocacy.
